Introduced in 2001, the .NAME generic top-level domain extension is the only one meant for personal websites only. These domain names can be personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other labels people are famous by. At first, only third-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to order john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Existing 3rd-level domain names remained running.
